5 Hair Care Secrets for Dyed Hair

Ombré, highlights or a full-on colour change - regardless of how you dye your hair, you need to take extra good care of it. These are five tricks to help you out!

1. DON’T USE SHAMPOO FOR 72 HOURS
Colourists say that you should wait a full 72 hours before shampooing your hair after a dye job. Why? Because it takes up to three days for the cuticle layer to fully close, trapping the colour molecules. So, postponing that first wash will help your colour last longer.

2. OCCASIONALLY REPLACE SHAMPOO WITH DRY SHAMPOO
The chemicals in hair dye make your hair more vulnerable, so use dry shampoo, instead of washing your hair, every now and then. For the days that you do wash your hair, adjust the temperature to lukewarm or cold when rinsing. Hot water lifts the outer cuticle layer, which is one of the most common reasons why your colour fades.

3. AVOID HOT STYLING TOOLS
Coloured hair is vulnerable to heat, so avoid using a hair dryer. Instead, try to gently blot your hair with a towel and let it air-dry. When you want to use tools to straighten or curl your hair, apply a heat protecting spray beforehand. If your tools allow it, use the cooler settings to spare your hair.

4. MOISTURE-BOOST OFTEN
Dyed hair tends to become dry and delicate, so treat it with conditioners specifically formulated for coloured hair. This will help to create a protective barrier. You can also try a leave-in conditioner, hot oils, or a hair mask if your hair needs more nourishment. A serum, oil or shine spray can also help to boost shine in lacklustre hair.

5. DON’T OVER-EXPOSE YOUR HAIR TO THE SUN
Finally, if you plan on spending time in the sun, always wear a hat or use styling products with SPF to keep your hair colour from fading or turning lighter.
